Core Curriculum

Troubleshooting, Service and Maintenance (TSM) | Length (Hours) 16

This course focuses on the service, repair, testing, inspection and preventative maintenance aspects of electronic security systems. This coursed covers the fundamentals of troubleshooting, as well as specific troubleshooting procedures for today’s systems.

Then Choose Two Additional Courses:

Advanced Intrusion Systems (AIS)| Length (Hours) 16

Is an advanced look at design and installation of intrusion systems. Students learn how to select and apply proper detectors, control panels and communication devices in a variety of intrusion system applications.   The course provides instruction on basic electronics and how it pertains to system design, component selection and troubleshooting. It includes information on system testing and commissioning as well as project management.

Fire Alarm Installation Methods (FAIM) | Length (Hours) 16

Provides broad training for attendees to learn proper installation and service requirements for commercial and household fire alarm systems based on NFPA and ICC codes. NFPA now requires that fire inspection and testing personnel be knowledgeable and trained, and that service personnel be qualified and experienced.  This course provides the information needed for installers and service technicians to become familiar with fire alarm system requirements necessary to gain certification and prove competence.

Electronic Access Control (EAC) | Length (Hours)

Provides broad training and information needed to successfully design and install an electronic access control system. This course teaches both the theory and the practical application of locks, door hardware and electronic access control systems. The course culminates in an actual system design exercise based on a given customer’s specifications and building plan.

Video Systems Technologies (VST) | Length (Hours) 16

Allows students to acquire the knowledge needed to successfully design and install a basic video surveillance system. This is a MUST course for any technician who is installing or servicing video systems. It focuses on methods and equipment including digital cameras, coaxial cabling, user interfaces, networking considerations, system design, and video storage options.

Fundamentals of Networking | Length (Hours) 4

Describe what a network is and the components that it is compromise of; Identify common topologies of networks; Describe how networks communicate and share data; Differentiate different storage types used in networked systems; Construct a network cable; Describe how a LAN and WAN functions and explain the difference between each; Detail the steps in troubleshooting network problems

Networking 101 - Basics | Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with various ways a network can be constructed and, in general terms, how data is sent from one point to another.

Networking 102 - Protocols | Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with various protocols you are likely to encounter when installing and maintaining security and life safety systems on a network.

Networking 103 - Data Transmission | Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with various mediums that’s a network may use to transmit data.

Networking 104 - Hardware |Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with the most commonly used networking hardware found in a business environment.  Knowing how hardware interacts with and communicates through other devices like hubs, routers and switches is important.

Networking 105 - Administration of Networks | Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with information on the important role administrators play in maintaining a network, as well as security concerns, sources of threats to a network and security measures employed to protect the network.

Networking 106 - Basic Network Troubleshooting| Length (Hours) 1

This course provides students with the basic tools that should be available when troubleshooting, as well as, general techniques that can be used to effectively troubleshoot a system.

Residential Fire Alarm | Length (Hours) 7

This course will provide individuals with experience designing, selling, installing, servicing and maintaining residential fire alarm systems. It teaches the code knowledge and practical technical skills you need to design, install and maintain residential fire alarm systems that comply with NFPA 72 (2011 edition), the IRC (2009 edition), NFPA 101 (2009 edition) and NFPA 70 (2008 edition).

Residential Networking Basics | Length (Hours) 4

The scope of this course is directed towards equipment that is used in residential systems. This course is designed to provide you with basic level knowledge of things like: Working with Ips, Understanding routers, Network types, General troubleshooting

Structured Wiring and the Security Industry | Length (Hours) 6

Provides students with information about planning, running and terminating structured wiring. The course covers network cabling and the various termination standards, as well as, phone cabling, punchdown blocks, coaxial cabling and the tools required to complete the job.

Asking the Right Questions to Identify Your Client's Needs | Length (Hours) 1

Are you asking the right questions to identify your clients’ needs? This course focuses on the art of active listening and effective questioning in order to identify those needs. After taking this course students should be able to discuss open ended and close ended questions, and identify the difference between the two. Students will also be able to identify the six principles of selling.

Codes and Standards Refresher including NEC | Length (Hours) 2

Designed to expand and refresh your knowledge of the codes and standards that provide regulation and guidance for the electronic security and life safety industry. The course also provides a thorough overview of the various sections of NFPA 70 (2014), also known as the National Electrical Code, that apply to fire alarm systems.

National Electrical Code as it Applies to Fire Alarm Systems | Length (Hours) 1

This course will provide a thorough overview of the various sections of NFPA 70, also know as the National Electrical Code, that apply to alarm systems.

Life Safety Code | Length (Hours) 8

Teaches students the practical application of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Instruction focuses on the fire alarm and access control requirements for most common occupancy classes that students will encounter on a daily basis, offering insights on common errors and areas of confusion.  Special attention is paid to the similarities and differences between the International Building Code (IBC) and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code.

Life Safety and Fire Alarm Systems | Length (Hours) 1

Provides students an overview of life safety and fire alarm systems

Life Safety and Occupancies | Length (Hours) 3

Provides information on life safety and occupancies. This course includes Assembly, Education, Day-Care, Hotel and Motel, and Health Care Occupancies.

International Building Code | Length (Hours) 8

Students learn the practical application of IBC, focusing on the fire alarm and access control requirements for the most common occupancy classes that will be encountered on a daily basis and offering insights on common errors and areas of confusion. Special attention is paid to the similarities and differences between the IBC and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code.

Diversity in the Workplace | Length (Hours) 1

With the world becoming more mobile and diverse, diversity has taken on a new importance in the workplace. This course will help participants understand what diversity is all about, and how they can help create a more diverse world at work and at home.

Harassment in the Workplace | Length (Hours) 1

This course will give you the tools necessary to recognize harassment in the workplace as well understand your rights and responsibilities under the law. It will also touch on safety in the workplace, which is in of itself a very important item in any organization.

Violence in the Workplace | Length (Hours) 1

This course will teach you how to identify and handle workplace violence.

Incident Reports for Security Professionals| Length (Hours) 1

Provides students with information on the considerations that may be needed when preparing and writing an incident report. Presenting facts and details as accurately as possible, while maintaining the integrity of the report is a major consideration.

Civility in the Workplace | Length (Hours) 1

This course introduces the concept of civility, its importance to a company, as well as its typical causes and effects. Skills needed to effectively practice civil behavior, as well as different ways organizations can systematize civility in the workplace will also be discussed.

Handling a Difficult Customer| Length (Hours) 1

This course will help employees develop skills to adapt to the challenges difficult customers pose and extend these skills to handling difficult people and situations throughout daily life.

Creative Problem Solving | Length (Hours) 1

This course will give participants an overview of the entire creative problem solving process, as well as key problem solving tools that they can use every day.
