By Jillian Bateman-McIntosh, COO of ESA Raising the Bar of Technician Education: ESA Revamps CAT 1 Training
The world of electronic security and life safety is advancing at lightning speed. From cutting-edge wireless systems to the expanding Internet of Things (IoT), the landscape our technicians navigate is constantly becoming more complex and interconnected. To ensure our professionals remain at the forefront of the industry, ESA is committed to providing top-tier education that evolves alongside the technology it supports.
ESA‘s flagship training program, Certified Alarm Technician (CAT) Level 1, has long been the gold standard in our industry. Recognized by authorities and widely respected for its rigor and relevance, it has equipped countless professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to install systems that safeguard lives and property. But resting on our laurels isn’t an option.
This year, we’re raising the bar once again. The 2025 edition of CAT Level 1 will feature both enhanced content and a more engaging delivery method, designed to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Here’s what’s coming:
- Wireless Technology: With 5G leading the charge, wireless systems are transforming how we think about connectivity and reliability. Our updated module will introduce technicians to the latest communication protocols, site assessments, and troubleshooting strategies.
- Internet of Things (IoT): IoT-enabled devices are becoming the backbone of modern security systems. We’re adding foundational content to ensure our learners are fluent in networking concepts, communication protocols, and security considerations that will define their daily work.
- Rack Basics: Often overlooked, proper rack installation and management are critical to system performance and longevity. From cable organization to cooling and grounding, we’re covering it all in this new module.
- Cybersecurity: With physical security now deeply intertwined with digital protection, it’s essential that technicians understand basic network security. Our expanded module will teach the fundamentals of safeguarding systems and data, ensuring they can mitigate potential risks.
But we’re not stopping at content updates. To meet the needs of modern learners, we’re transforming how we deliver this material. Gone are the days of passive, text-heavy online courses. Instead, expect interactive video simulations, gamification, and dynamic check-ins that actively engage learners and reinforce their understanding.
Why does this matter? Because every improvement we make to technician training translates into better service for our customers and stronger communities for everyone. At ESA, we recognize that education is a powerful tool—not just for professional growth but for the integrity and reputation of our entire industry.
I couldn’t be more excited about the 2025 Certified Alarm Technician Level 1 revamp, expected to be released in the first quarter of 2025. It’s an investment in our technicians, our businesses, and the safety of the people and places we protect.
Let’s continue raising the bar together.
