Unlock Your Potential- How to Become an NTS Instructor
For over 37 years, the ESA training program has flourished, gaining recognition and growth thanks to its invaluable asset – dedicated instructors. These individuals play a pivotal role, not only in teaching our 100+ core and CEU courses but also in shaping the future of the program by contributing to course updates and developing new content. Currently, we boast a team of 31 active instructors spread across the country, but with an annual student base of nearly 7000, there’s always room for passionate individuals to join our ranks.
Why Become an NTS Instructor?
Becoming an NTS Instructor isn’t about being the top technician in your class; it’s about having a passion for the electronic security and life safety industry. While technical knowledge is essential, what truly sets our instructors apart is their ability to share information effectively. Whether you specialize in fire, video, access control, or network communication systems, if you have a desire to impart knowledge, we want to hear from you.
Moreover, NTS Certified Instructors are independent subcontractors, offering a unique opportunity to turn your passion into additional revenue. Teaching others becomes a rewarding venture both professionally and financially.

The Path to Becoming an NTS Instructor
The certification process for NTS Instructors is overseen by the ESA Education Committee, particularly the Instructor Subcommittee. This ensures that instructors are not only knowledgeable but also committed to the program.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to become an NTS Instructor:
- Active NTS Certification: Obtain at least one active NTS Certification, such as Certified Alarm Technician Level I or Certified Fire Alarm Technician.
- Application Submission: Submit an extensive application showcasing your teaching experience and field expertise. The Instructor Subcommittee will thoroughly review your skills.
- Instructor’s Exam: Take an instructor’s exam, focusing on the topics you plan to teach. A passing grade of 80% or higher is required.
- Student Teaching: Complete the final step by student teaching two NTS courses alongside an experienced instructor. This ensures you are familiar with the content and confident in teaching independently.
While the process may seem meticulous, most candidates can complete it in two to three months. It not only guarantees a deep understanding of the content but also instills confidence in your ability to lead a course effectively.
