COURSE DESCRIPTION
This Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) certification bundle will give you access to all of the online courses included in this certification path in one bundled package. Access to the courses is sequential and once the first class is completed you will automatically be registered and given access to the next course in the bundle.
Once you have completed the online courses and passed the exams, please email NTS@esaweb.org or call NTS at 972-807-6800 to request registration in a Virtual Professional Fire Alarm Design (PFAD) class. See here for a schedule of PFAD courses.
After all courses and their proctored exams are complete, you can email NTS@esaweb.org or call NTS at 972-807-6800 to be enrolled in the comprehensive CFAD exam.
Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) level 3 is an equivalent alternative to NICET level 3, providing a different route to certification — all for one cost-effective, bundled price that includes e-manuals for each of the four included courses — a total of 59 hours of training. ESA’s CFAD is also approved by the following AHJs as an alternate to NICET level 3:
- Alaska – ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for IC and IC-DO permits
- Iowa– ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for Fire Alarm System contractor
- Louisiana– ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for Qualifier-Fire Alarm
- Tennessee– ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for Qualifier
- Texas– ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for Fire Alarm Planning Superintendent (APS) license
- Washington– ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer (CFAD) is approved for fire alarm design review
To ensure students are learning exactly what is needed to become a successful ESA Certified Fire Alarm Designer, each course in this alternative to NICET level 3 certification is further broken down into easy-to-digest modules, ending with a comprehensive assessment that must be passed by 80 percent or higher to be able to take the final proctored exam and receive certification.

Certified Alarm Technician Level I - 22 hours
This foundational course, followed by a two-hour examination, provides students with an understanding of the industry and their role within it and provides the essential knowledge and skills for all forms of electronic security: intrusion detection, fire detection, video surveillance and access control. Fire Alarm Installation Methods - 14 hours
This course provides broad training for attendees to learn proper installation and service requirements for commercial fire alarm systems based on NFPA and ICC codes. MORE
Life Safety Code - 7 hours
This course teaches students the practical application of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. MORE
Professional Fire Alarm Design - 16 hours
The course focuses on providing a more advanced level of knowledge gleaned from national codes regarding proper detector selection, required coverage for specific building occupancies, as well as documentation and plan submittal requirements. MORE

State Approvals/Recognition
This certification is approved in the following states for licensure:

Online Courses:
If the student has completed less than ¼ of the course and a request is made to cancel, a refund is available less a 25% administrative fee. Students may choose to transfer their funds to another ESA/NTS provided course if less than ¼ the course has been completed. Transfers will not be issued until the class materials, including the course manual, is returned in like new condition to ESA/NTS. Fund transfers cannot be made to non-ESA/NTS courses due to the varied payment terms established by the Training Providers. Cancellation requests made beyond one-quarter through the course will not be refunded or transferred. Refunds should be expected within thirty days of receipt of returned materials.Live In-Person and Virtual Courses
Provider Cancellation Policy: Training Providers may cancel a class with at least 5 calendar days’ notice to pre-registered students. Classes may be cancelled without advance notice due to weather conditions or other unforeseeable emergencies. The Training Coordinator determines the conditions that constitute an emergency. All monies paid to the Training Provider for a class that is cancelled shall be fully refunded within 14 business days of the cancellation notice. Students may choose to have their monies credited towards another scheduled class. Students should contact the Training Provider for additional terms and conditions regarding their refund policy. Student Cancellation Policy: If a student cancels an ESA National Training School course more than seven days prior to the class, a refund, less a 25% administrative fee, will be issued. In lieu of canceling, a student can opt to transfer their funds to a future course.
